Due to the development of respiratory insufficiency and serious systemic manifestations of the disease in some patients, the current approach to COVID-19 requires the availability of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds and ventilators, among other forms of advanced life support systems.

In an attempt to provide a view on available key resources to treat COVID-19 patients in each country, ALERT launched a tool that forecasts the number of days before full capacity is reached in ICU beds and ventilators in each country at the current infection rate and also at different hypothetical rates of new COVID-19 infections.

The first case provided here is for Portugal. We encourage visiting this tool as other countries will be studied next.

ALERT is also:
studying COVID-19 governance measures adopted in different countries to understand their impact on disease progression (see COVID-19 Governance), and;
actively exploring the possibility that anti-inflammatory therapy at an early stage of the COVID-19 disease may be important in explaining striking differences in the fatality rate of this disease between different countries by taking European countries as an example, as described earlier (1, 2).
